ILLINOIS ASSOCIATION
HONORED FOR
LEGISLATIVE EFFORTS

The Independent Insurance Agents of America presented the Maurice G. Herndon Award to the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois (PIIAI) in recognition of the state association's efforts to secure passage of legislation regulating sales of insurance by banks. The award was presented at the IIAA's annual National Legislative Conference.

The legislation passed in Illinois affirms the state's authority to regulate bank's insurance activities and establishes safeguards for such activities. "The accord the Illinois agents worked out with their bank counterparts is a common-sense, balanced approach to the integration of banking and insurance in that state," said IIAA President Bud Wilson.

"And now the Illinois law is being touted and, more importantly, used as a 'safe harbor' in federal legislation that modernizes the financial services industry and creates a fair regulatory system as the lines between financial providers continues to blur even more," said Wilson. "The current financial services reform proposal in the House would prohibit the Comptroller of the Currency from preempting other state laws and regulations that are similar to those in the Illinois statute."

The award from IIAA also commended the PIIAI for its continued high level of participation in IIAA's government affairs program.
