UNG focuses on specialty products and portfolios and commercial binding authorities, including businesses focused in areas such as social services, equine, municipality, lawyers professional liability, miscellaneous professional liability, liquor liability, commercial umbrella and other specific niches. The lines of coverage on which UNG focuses include primary commercial general liability, property, inland marine, miscellaneous professional liability, package and umbrella liability. These products are offered through UNG's Commercial Binding Authority Division which employs a network of general agents appointed to underwrite on behalf of UNG using UNG's commercial binding authority guidelines for general liability, property and package business, or through UNG's relationships with general agents with portfolios of similar products. UNG is seeking to appoint additional general agents in specific territories.

UNG says that while many of UNG's competitors have targeted only large portfolios or large commercial binding authority agents with significant minimums, UNG's successful relationships are built on minimum profitability standards as opposed to minimum sized portfolios. UNG has a diversified mix of business, a large number of specialty products and a growing base of commercial binding authority agents. UNG's development plans for specialty products are centered around the wholesale broker. UNG seeks general agents with accomplished professional underwriting talent, positive track records, excellent reputations and established distribution systems. Thus, its partners are agents who have demonstrated an expertise in underwriting a particular niche and have an outstanding distribution system.

UNG has a bias towards writing business on a surplus lines basis, giving relative freedom of operation as to rates and policy forms, although it has capabilities to write on an admitted basis nationwide. Appointed general agents may be responsible for the underwriting, rating, policy preparation, payments, policy servicing, etc. UNG is strictly focused on the long-term profitability of its products.
